Gardening for Dummies

Since I know exactly zero about gardening, I have a few questions.

1) Do I really have to use raised beds like they recommend in Square Foot Gardening? Can't I just garden right into the ground? It seems silly to me that I would have to use a raised bed...

2) Is it too late to start?

3) Is this going to cost me a fortune since I am starting so late?

I want to garden but don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to do so, but every book I read seems to imply that I need to spend a bucket load of money to garden successfully. Please help!

You can put it in the ground but it is more work.

Containers are easier and cheaper than raised beds for the first year. I am using 5 gallon buckets for tomatoes and peppers right now. a large round "tub" (with rope handles for some reason) has carrots in it. There are plenty of sites online about container gardening. You will get some veggies etc this year, and can buy your things for next year at the end of this season (clearance). You may even be able to find someone to save you some seeds this year to start next spring.

I only recently got raised beds; the ground works great. (You just have to work on your knees.) I'm putting my garden in this weekend--and have done so at this time in the past no problem. $--depends on what you plant. I tend to plant "plants" since I only need a few of each. You truly only need the number the square calls for. I say go for it; whatever you grow is cheaper and good practice!

Do you have a friend or family member who has a tiller and could break up the ground for you? That's the hardest part of getting it into the ground.

As for the cost, I would think you'd need to buy plants at this late date, but the fact that it is late might work in your favor -- stores might be discounting them since they won't be good for much longer. Again, if you have gardening friends/family, ask them if they have any leftover plants. My Mom starts everything from seed and always has extras which she gives away.
